The lore is truth in costume
This week altineris.com stopped being a marketing site and became a universe: a live WebGL star system where the generation engine is a molten sun, the review queue is a satellite called Sputnik Editor-1, publishing risks are pixel-art invaders, and your audience is a swarm of small creatures that crowd every fresh landing. You can drag it, tap it, provoke a raid, and take a seven-stop tour.
The obvious question is the one worth writing down: how do you build something that theatrical for a B2B infrastructure product without it becoming theater?
The treaty
Every body in the universe maps to a system that exists in a repository or an issue tracker. That is not a design preference — it is a rule with teeth, and it has already removed things from the sky. The mapping is public: the starchart indexes every planet, gate, and invader against what it really is.
The other rules follow the same shape:
- Statuses are real, in both directions. When capabilities land with tests, the pages say so — each publishing instrument prints a manifest with tracker evidence. When something is a scaffold, it looks like a scaffold: the VIDEO format is a dark planet in a wireframe cage, because the code returns a deliberate refusal until the format is real.
- No invented numbers. The scene's counters are labelled SPECIMEN. No price appears anywhere, because cost has not been measured yet. During a review we found one number that had slipped through — an originality threshold the platform never published — and rewrote it to what the documentation actually says.
- Humans hold launch authority. The sputnik is not a metaphor for a feature flag. It is the review queue, and there is no API around it.
The second register
A universe has a discoverability problem: nobody searches for "the warm cluster," and an AI assistant asked about Instagram's publish limits will never quote a sentence about wormhole rings.
The fix was additive, not substitutive. Every lore page carries one plain quotable sentence near the top stating what the thing actually is. The entity graph declares stable identities that other properties — including this one — can reference. And the research the instruments are built on is published as citation-backed field guides in plain URLs and plain headings, carrying the same confidence discipline used internally: every claim marked documented, inference, or unknown, and a number without a citation treated as a fabrication.
The pixel headings stayed. The universe stayed. Machines read the register underneath it.
What it proves
The costume and the honesty are not in tension — the costume only works because the honesty holds it up. A universe where hovering any planet tells you the truth about a real system is more convincing than a template that says "trusted by teams everywhere," precisely because it can afford to show its seams.
